This medicine is used to treat the symptoms of the common cold, flu, allergies, and other respiratory diseases (e.g., sinusitis, bronchitis). Watery eyes, itchy eyes/nose/throat, runny nose, and sneezing are all relieved by promethazine, an antihistamine. Codeine is an opioid cough suppressant (antitussive) that works by decreasing the urge to cough by affecting a specific region of the brain. Cough suppressants containing opioids should not be given to children under the age of 18. Children are more susceptible to significant (even deadly) adverse effects, including breathing difficulties. Discuss the risks and advantages of this medicine with your doctor. Colds are not cured by cough-and-cold products.
Other strategies to ease cough and cold symptoms, such as drinking enough water, using a humidifier, or utilizing saline nasal drops/spray, should be discussed with your doctor or pharmacist.
