Suboxone is an FDA-approved drug for the treatment of opiate addiction, including heroin addiction. It works effectively, according to experts, since it’s a “sticky” medication, meaning it attaches to the same receptors as opiates.
Dr. Adam Bisaga, professor of psychiatry at CUMC and researcher at the New York State Psychiatric Institute, said, “It also activates the receptors, although not as powerfully as heroin.” Bisaga works directly with heroin users and has spoken before Congress on how to tackle the opioid crisis.
