Oxycontin is used to relieve moderate to severe pain. Long-distance Oxycontin release tablets and extended-discharge capsules are used to treat severe pain in patients who are likely to need long-term pain medication and are unable to take other drugs all day. Oxycontin extended-release tablets and extended-release capsules should not be used to alleviate the pain that can be controlled with medicines if necessary. Oxycontin extended-release tablets, extended-release capsules, and concentric solutions should only be used to treat people who are opioid-tolerant, as these medications must be taken for at least one week.
. Oxycontin belongs to the opiate (narcotic) analgesics family of medicines. It works by altering the brain’s and nervous system’s reactions to pain. Acetaminophen, aspirin (Percodan), and ibuprofen are all used in conjunction with Oxycontin (Oxycet, Percocet, Roxiquet, Xartemis XR, others). The use of Oxycontin is also covered in this monograph. If you’re taking an Oxycontin combination medicine, read all of the ingredients and contact your doctor or pharmacist for further information.
